I. JOB OVERVIEW Job Description Summary:

The George Washington University Libraries & Academic Innovation (GWLAI) is seeking applications for a temporary Software Developer. The successful candidate will combine a strong service orientation and experience in software development to ensure that GWLAI maintains and builds upon its commitment to excellence supporting researchers and facilitating information discovery for the George Washington University (GWU) community.

The Software Developer will work independently and as a part of a team of software developers. S/he will be responsible for developing and contributing code to original software development projects and implementing open-source software tools. S/he will be responsible for facilitating discussion with stakeholders and translating those discussion into improvements to strategically evolve GWLAI systems and workflows. The Software Developer will perform software development, front end design, production support, and other tasks to develop custom software tools primarily in support of library services and GWU research projects. A successful candidate will be able to work collaboratively with stakeholders strategically to meet GWLAI s needs to produce new tools, address maintenance needs, and pursue new innovative ideas in support of GWU s research enterprise.

The Software Developer will serve as part of GWLAI s Scholarly Technology Group which is composed of software developers, librarians, IT professionals, and GIS specialists working on projects that include software development, digital collections, student success, and research support initiatives. The Software Developer will work closely with the GWLAI Communications team which includes web developers and web designers. The position reports to the Director of Scholarly Technology.

Minimum Qualifications:

Qualified candidates will hold a Bachelor s degree in an appropriate area of specialization. Degree must be conferred by the start date of the position. Degree requirements may be substituted with an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

Knowledge of other software languages such as Python, Java, Javascript , Ruby on Rails or other similar language. Experience working in an academic library or consortial library environment Project management experience, including planning, communication, and assessment; Experience leveraging Application Program Interfaces (APIs) through original and community software development projects to create new user applications and support data-driven decision making Demonstrated experience with open source development practices, and willingness to use proprietary tools when appropriate. Experience using source control systems such as Git or Github Knowledge of container tools such as Docker Strong engagement in professional service and scholarship
